YoYoGames Wiki:Article naming

From YoYoGames Wiki

Articles in the YoYo Games wiki need to have a proper naming. In order to achieve consistency in naming of articles and therefore make content easily accessible, the YoYo Games wiki abides to certain naming conventions which will be described throughout this page.

Contents

Capitalization

As enforced by technical limitations of the MediaWiki software we use, the first letter of the article will be automatically capitalized.

If the article's name is a proper noun, e.g. Game Maker, then the separate words must be capitalized. If the article is about a certain concept, then the first letters of the following words should not be capitalized, e.g. Double click.

Note: if you spot a user using incorrect capitalization, please link them to YY:CAPS which will redirect to this section.

Use of Plurals

When referring to a certain common subject, it is incorrect to have the title in plural form. For example, it is wrong to have an article named double clicks, beta versions, create events, etc. since the articles refer to the concept of a double click, beta version, and create event respectively.

If, however, you name a certain tutorial's article as to describe its content, such as Code tips, then it is acceptable to use plurals. Although this type of general article is not encouraged for this wiki (specialized tutorials are preferred).

Note: if you spot a user with an incorrect use of pluralization, please link them to YY:PLURAL which will redirect to this section.

Unnecessary Categorization in Titles

The title of an article must not employ categorization. So if you're talking about a tutorial don't put "Tutorial: " in front of the article name, or "Tip: " in front of the name of an article for a certain tip you want to share. Instead, you call your article by a proper name and use actual categorization to achieve the effect you want. For example, you can add [[Category:Tutorials]] if your article is a tutorial.

Similarly, function names are not preceeded by anything nor any other type of article.

You may have come across some articles beginning with "Game Maker Advanced: " or "GML Overview: " or other similar naming styles. These are only used for articles that have been copied from the Game Maker Documentation. They form an index by linking to other articles of functions, etc. Do not create an article with a similar style as all Documentation articles have been imported (and these are the only ones allowed to follow this naming convention). However, you are welcome to edit the existing articles to enhance and improve the online copy of the Game Maker documentation in any way you deem as helpful.

Note: if you spot a user using incorrect categorization in the title, please link them to YY:TITLECAT which will redirect to this section.

Abbreviations

Though it is advisable to have full and proper names for article titles, for some technical and large terms it may be necessary to abbreviate the title. This should depend on whether the abbreviation itself is more popular and recognisable than the abbreivated term (e.g. JPEG[1]). For such an example as Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game (MMORPG), it would be best to have full title, for the following reasons:

  • Its full title gives a casual reader an immediate understanding of what it is (unlike JPEG).
  • While its abbreviation can be considered more popular, the full title itself remains in frequent and interchangeable use with the abbreviation.
  • For an informed reader on the subject, the full title will probably be entered into the search engine.
Note: use #REDIRECT followed by the article's name as a link (within [[ ]]), to redirect any reader who may enter the abbreviation or full title (whichever is not occupied by the article itself).[2]

Quick Recap

  1. Which is the abbreviation of the Joint Photographic Experts Group (the commitee that created the standard)
  2. For the given example, Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game, #REDIRECT Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game would be placed on the article called MMORPG.
